Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s India debut still on hold as Morne Morkel explains team’s thinking

India’s young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is still waiting for his international debut, and according to bowling coach Morne Morkel, the decision is not as simple as many fans think.

The 15-year-old has been one of the biggest talking points in India’s T20 squad during the ongoing England tour. With Sanju Samson struggling for runs at the top of the order, many expected Sooryavanshi to get a chance soon. But the Indian team management has decided to stay patient.

Morkel: It’s about backing the players who have delivered

Speaking ahead of the next T20I, Morkel said India cannot make a quick change without considering the players who have already performed for the team in big tournaments.

He pointed out that India currently have Abhishek Sharma, rated among the top T20 batters, and Sanju Samson, who played a major role in India’s T20 World Cup success. Because of that, the support staff feels it is important to continue backing the players who helped the team win important matches.

Morkel made it clear that Sooryavanshi is exciting talent, but the team also wants to show trust in the players already in the XI rather than making sudden changes after a few poor scores. He also suggested that changing the batting order or shifting players out of their natural positions is not ideal unless absolutely needed.

Why Sooryavanshi has not played yet

India’s management appears to be balancing two things:

  • giving chances to a special young talent like Sooryavanshi

  • staying loyal to the players who recently helped India win the T20 World Cup

That is why, despite Samson’s low scores of 5, 0 and 1 in the first three matches of the tour, the team has not rushed to hand Sooryavanshi a debut cap.

Morkel impressed with the 15-year-old in training

Even though Sooryavanshi has not played yet, Morkel said the youngster has already made a strong impression inside the camp.

He praised the teenager for settling in quickly with the senior squad and handling the pressure of international-level training very well. Morkel added that training with a senior India side at just 15 years of age can be intimidating, but Sooryavanshi has looked comfortable and confident in the nets.

According to Morkel, the team is excited about Sooryavanshi’s future and believes he will be ready whenever his opportunity comes.

Will Sooryavanshi make his debut soon?

That remains the big question.

India did not announce their playing XI early for the Manchester T20I, so there is still some suspense over whether the youngster could finally get his first cap. But if India continue with the same batting combination, Sooryavanshi may have to wait a little longer.

Still, with Samson yet to find form and Sooryavanshi continuing to impress in the background, the debate around his debut is only getting bigger.

Big picture for India

For now, India’s message is clear: they are not looking at Sooryavanshi as a quick fix. Instead, the team wants to manage his introduction carefully while also respecting the players who have already delivered on the big stage.

That may delay his debut for now, but it also shows that when Sooryavanshi does finally get his chance, it will come with full backing from the team.
