Lahiru Udara produced the innings of his Test career on Friday, hammering a brilliant 188 to put Sri Lanka in command on the opening day of the second Test against West Indies in North Sound, Antigua.
After being asked to bat, Sri Lanka ended Day 1 in a strong position at 338/5 in 83 overs, with Udara’s marathon knock laying the platform for the visitors after a difficult start to the series. The right-handed opener, playing one of the finest innings of his short Test career, missed out on a double hundred by just 12 runs but ensured Sri Lanka finished the day firmly on top.
Lahiru Udara’s maiden Test ton changes the tone of the series
Sri Lanka came into the second Test looking for a response after a heavy defeat in the first match, and Udara delivered exactly that. The wicketkeeper-batter showed patience early on before gradually taking control, punishing loose deliveries and keeping the West Indies bowlers under pressure for most of the day.
His 188 was not just his maiden Test century, but also one of Sri Lanka’s most valuable innings on the tour so far. Udara’s knock gave the visitors the stability they badly needed after a poor showing in the series opener.
He found excellent support from Kamindu Mendis, and together the pair added a massive 215-run partnership for the third wicket, turning the game decisively in Sri Lanka’s favour. While Udara played the anchor role for long periods, he also found boundaries regularly once he settled in, ensuring the scoreboard kept moving.
Sri Lanka recover strongly after early wickets
West Indies had hoped to make early inroads after opting to bowl, but Sri Lanka recovered impressively. Once Udara settled at the crease, the home side struggled to find a way through. The Antigua surface offered some help in patches, but the West Indies attack could not maintain enough pressure for long stretches.
The Udara-Kamindu stand frustrated the hosts and shifted momentum completely. By the time Udara fell late in the day, Sri Lanka had already built a commanding platform and put themselves in position to push for a 450-plus total.
At stumps, Kusal Mendis and Sonal Dinusha were at the crease, with Sri Lanka eyeing a huge first-innings score on Day 2.
Why Lahiru Udara’s innings matters
Udara’s innings could prove to be a major moment in Sri Lanka’s Test rebuilding phase. The 32-year-old has long been seen as a strong domestic performer, and this knock showed he can deliver at the highest level too. In overseas conditions, against a West Indies pace attack that includes quality seamers, Udara showed composure, shot selection and endurance over a long period.
For Sri Lanka, the innings was important not only because of the runs, but because it came when the team needed a statement performance. After being outplayed in the first Test, they needed someone to absorb pressure and bat deep. Udara did exactly that.
