India get a fresh start and a chance to wash away a painful few weeks when they take on England in the first ODI of the three-match series at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Tuesday, July 14. After being swept 4-0 in the T20Is, the tourists switch formats — and switch gears — with a much stronger side.
The good news for India is that this is a very different team. Shubman Gill takes over as ODI captain, and the big guns are back: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul all return. Shreyas Iyer, who had a miserable time as T20I skipper, drops to vice-captain and can now focus on his batting, which was one of India's few positives on tour.
England, meanwhile, are riding high after their T20I domination and welcome back Joe Root to strengthen their middle order. Harry Brook leads a confident side that will be eager to carry that momentum into the 50-over format.
But England have their own worries in this format. This is their first ODI since a 3-0 whitewash away to New Zealand late last year, so their 50-over form is nowhere near as strong as their T20I form.
With the ODI World Cup in South Africa just over a year away, this series matters to both teams.

ENG vs IND Today Match Pitch Report
Edgbaston Pitch Report: Edgbaston usually offers something for everyone. The new ball tends to seam and swing, and the bounce in the first 10 overs can be tricky, so the openers will have to work hard early on.
But once batters get through that phase, the pitch becomes very good for batting. The ball comes on nicely, the outfield is quick, and big scores are common here. Spinners can find some grip later in the innings, but this is a ground where 300-plus totals are very much in play.
Average First Innings Score: 280-300
Best Strategy: Bowl first, use the new ball, then bat deep
The weather looks clear for a full game — warm and sunny in Birmingham, with no rain expected and a high of around 27°C.

India lead this rivalry comfortably in ODIs, and the recent record is even better for them — they have won seven of their last nine bilateral ODI series against England since 2010, including a 3-0 sweep at home in 2025.
But India come in with their own worries. Since July 2024, they have lost three of their six bilateral ODI series — away to Sri Lanka, away to Australia, and at home to New Zealand. Away form remains the big question.
ENG vs IND: Predicted Playing XIs
England Playing XI (confirmed): Jacob Bethell, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook (C), Jos Buttler (WK), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Adil Rashid
England have named their XI, and it comes with a surprise: Jacob Bethell will open the batting for the first time in his ODI career, alongside Ben Duckett. Bethell has batted in the middle order in all 21 of his ODIs so far, so this is a big vote of confidence after his superb T20I series.
Joe Root returns at No. 3 to add calm and class, and there is a special moment for Jos Buttler, who will play his 200th ODI for England — a career that began back in 2012.
England have also gone spin-heavy, with Adil Rashid leading the attack, supported by Liam Dawson and the off-spin of Will Jacks — a clear plan to slow India's batters down in the middle overs. Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue and Sam Curran make up the pace attack.
India Playing XI: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (C), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (VC), KL Rahul (WK), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna
India's XI has a completely different look. Rohit and Gill open together — a partnership that averages a superb 60.9 — with Kohli at three and Rahul keeping wicket. The bowling is led by Bumrah, with Kuldeep Yadav the key spinner and Washington Sundar and Axar Patel providing all-round balance.
India also have exciting young pacers Gurnoor Brar and Prince Yadav in the squad, waiting for a chance.
Players to Watch
Best Batter for India – Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli returns to the format he owns. He is closing in on 15,000 ODI runs and will play his 300th innings in this series — a landmark few will ever reach. Edgbaston has good memories and bad for him, but there is no batter India would rather have chasing a big score.
Best Batter for England – Joe Root
Joe Root is back and brings the one thing England's T20I side did not need but their ODI side does — control. His ability to build an innings and rotate strike makes him the perfect anchor around which the big hitters can play freely.
Best Bowler – Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah's return changes India's bowling completely. He is the man for every phase — new ball, middle overs, death. He also has a special record at The Oval-type surfaces in England, and England's batters know exactly how dangerous he can be.
X-Factor – Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep Yadav could be India's trump card in the middle overs. England play spin well, but Kuldeep's variations have troubled them before, and if he can pick up wickets between overs 15 and 40, India will control the game.
ENG vs IND Match Prediction
This looks a much more even contest than the T20Is. England have momentum and home advantage, but India's ODI side is far stronger than the T20I team that was swept aside, and their record in this format against England is excellent.
The big question is rust. Kohli, Rohit and Bumrah have not played much recently, and how quickly they find their rhythm could decide the match.

Who Will Win Today's Match?
India start as slight favourites on paper, thanks to the return of their senior stars and a strong ODI record against England. But England are full of confidence, playing at home, and have a settled, in-form side.
Expect a high-scoring game at Edgbaston. If India's big names click, they should win. If the rust shows, England will pounce.
Prediction: India to edge a close, high-scoring opener — but it will be much tighter than the T20Is.
