Riyan Parag Appointed New Captain of Rajasthan Royals Ahead of IPL 2026

In a major leadership shake-up ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Riyan Parag has been named the new captain of the Rajasthan Royals cricket team.

The decision marks a fresh chapter for the franchise following the departure of long-time skipper Sanju Samson.

A New Era Begins

Parag, 24, takes over the captaincy after Sanju Samson — who had led Rajasthan Royals since 2021 — was traded to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during a blockbuster mid-season deal.

In return, Rajasthan acquired all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, aiming to strengthen its squad balance for the upcoming campaign.

With the exit of former head coach Rahul Dravid at the end of the 2025 season, RR’s leadership landscape has changed significantly. Parag will now work alongside new head coach Kumar Sangakkara, bringing youthful energy and fresh ideas to the dugout.

Parag’s Journey and Credentials

Riyan Parag is not new to leadership responsibilities. He has been part of the Royals setup since 2019 and briefly captained the side during the IPL 2025 season when Samson was injured.

In those eight matches, he led the team while still contributing with the bat, showcasing his all-round potential.

As a batsman, Parag’s performances have steadily improved, including a standout 2024 season where he scored 573 runs at a strong strike rate. Over his IPL career, Parag has featured in 84 IPL matches, scoring 1566 runs at a strike rate of 141.84.

The Royals struggled in the 2025 IPL, finishing ninth in the points table with just four wins from 14 games. The new captaincy appointment reflects the franchise’s belief in nurturing young leaders and building a long-term strategy around Parag’s cricketing skills and leadership potential.

Parag’s elevation also highlights RR’s commitment to evolving their team identity after several seasons under Samson’s leadership. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the young skipper steers the Royals in the fiercely competitive 2026 season.
