IND vs USA Match Highlights: Defending champions India kicked off their ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-fought 29-run win over the United States of America at a packed Wankhede Stadium on Saturday evening.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav delivered a breathtaking unbeaten 84 off just 49 deliveries, single-handedly pulling India out of deep trouble after the top order crumbled in spectacular fashion.
After winning the toss, USA skipper Monank Patel made the bold call to bowl first under lights in Mumbai. It proved to be an inspired decision — at least in the early stages.
Ali Khan drew first blood in just the second over, sending the dangerous Abhishek Sharma back for a golden duck. Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma attempted to rebuild, stitching together a 37-run partnership, but the real damage came from an unlikely source.
South African-born pacer Shadley van Schalkwyk ripped through the Indian middle order with a devastating final over of the powerplay, removing Kishan (20 off 16), Varma (25 off 16), and Shivam Dube for a duck — all in the space of six balls. India were reeling at 46 for 4 after the powerplay, and the sold-out Mumbai crowd had fallen silent.
Rinku Singh offered brief resistance alongside Suryakumar but managed only 6 off 14 before falling to legspinner Mohammad Mohsin. When Hardik Pandya departed shortly after, India had slumped to a dire 77 for 6, and an embarrassing collapse on home soil looked very much on the cards.
Captain's Knock: Suryakumar Turns the Tide
With wickets tumbling around him, Suryakumar played the innings that his team desperately needed — and perhaps the knock that will define the early days of this tournament.
The 35-year-old Mumbai batter showed remarkable composure initially, taking 36 balls to reach his fifty. He brought up the milestone in typical style, scooping a full toss over deep backward square leg to send the Wankhede crowd into raptures. From that point on, he shifted gears completely, hammering 34 runs off his final 13 deliveries.
His partnership of 41 with Axar Patel — India's highest seventh-wicket stand in T20 World Cup history — gave the innings the stability it needed. But the real fireworks came in the death overs, where Suryakumar targeted veteran left-arm seamer Saurabh Netravalkar with ruthless precision.
In the final over alone, Suryakumar plundered 21 runs, repeatedly dragging deliveries from outside off stump to the leg-side boundary and often ending up flat on his back after completing the shot.
Netravalkar's figures of 0/65 from his four overs turned out to be the most expensive spell in T20 World Cup history, surpassing Sanath Jayasuriya's 0/64 from 2007.
Suryakumar finished unbeaten on 84 — a knock laced with 10 fours and 4 sixes — and lifted India from 77/6 to a competitive 161/9. It was the second-highest score by a captain on T20 World Cup debut, trailing only Chris Gayle's 88 against Australia in 2009. He also picked up the Player of the Match award, his 17th in T20Is, surpassing Virat Kohli's record of 16.
For the USA, Van Schalkwyk was the standout performer, finishing with figures of 4/25 from his four overs. Harmeet Singh, a Mumbai-born left-arm spinner now representing the USA, contributed 2/26.
Indian Bowlers Seal the Deal
Chasing 162, the USA never got going. Mohammed Siraj, who came into the squad as a late replacement for the injured Harshit Rana (with Jasprit Bumrah also missing due to viral fever), struck early by dismissing Andries Gous in the second over.
Arshdeep Singh then removed captain Monank Patel with the first ball of the third over, and when Siraj had Saiteja Mukkamalla caught by Varun Chakravarthy, the USA were gasping at 15 for 3 inside the powerplay.
Milind Kumar offered some resistance with a gritty knock that included a handful of boundaries, but the required run rate kept climbing. The Indian spinners — Chakravarthy and Axar Patel — kept things tight through the middle overs, never allowing the USA batters to build momentum on a surface that offered considerable grip.
Shubham Ranjane, who once played under Suryakumar's captaincy for Mumbai in domestic cricket, tried his best to keep the fight alive in the closing stages, but it was too little, too late.
Siraj wrapped up proceedings in the final over with his third wicket, finishing with impressive figures of 3/18. The USA were bowled out for 132 with three balls to spare.
India's successful defence of 161 marked the lowest total ever defended in a T20I at the Wankhede Stadium.
India will next face Namibia on February 12 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi as they continue their quest to become the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title.
Brief Scores:India 161/9 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 84; Shadley van Schalkwyk 4-25, Harmeet Singh 2-26) beat USA 132/8 in 20 overs (Sanjay Krishnamurthi 37; Mohammed Siraj 3-29, Arshdeep Singh 2-18, Axar Patel 2-24) by 29 runs
