Afghanistan T20 World Cup 2026 Team Preview: Squad, SWOT Analysis & Probable Playing 11

Afghanistan are no longer giant killers — they are genuine contenders. Their historic semi-final run at the 2024 T20 World Cup proved they belong among the elite, and the squad assembled under captain Rashid Khan for this edition is arguably their strongest ever.

Placed in Group D alongside New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, and UAE, Afghanistan face a tough path but have the quality to advance.

Afghanistan Full Squad

Rashid Khan (c), Noor Ahmad, Abdullah Ahmadzai, Sediqullah Atal, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Mohammad Ishaq (wk), Shahidullah Kamal, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Darwish Rasooli, Ibrahim Zadran, Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi

(Note: Naveen-ul-Haq was ruled out due to injury and replaced by Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi)

Afghanistan Team SWOT Analysis

Strengths

  • Best spin trio in the tournament. Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad (left-arm wrist-spin), and Mujeeb Ur Rahman give Afghanistan three world-class spinners who can dominate any batting lineup on subcontinental tracks. This is their greatest weapon.

  • Rahmanullah Gurbaz is one of the most destructive openers in T20 cricket. His ability to clear the ropes at will in the powerplay gives Afghanistan a flying start more often than not.

  • Fazalhaq Farooqi's left-arm swing is a lethal new-ball weapon. He was the leading wicket-taker at the 2024 T20 World Cup and has become one of the most sought-after T20 bowlers globally.

  • Fearless cricket mentality — Afghanistan play without fear and this liberated approach makes them incredibly dangerous in pressure situations.

Weaknesses

  • Batting depth beyond the top 4 is thin. If Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rasooli, and Omarzai fail, the lower order lacks the firepower to rescue innings consistently.

  • Naveen-ul-Haq's injury is a significant blow. He was Afghanistan's second-best pace bowler, and his replacement weakens the seam-bowling department.

  • Death bowling with pace remains an area of concern. While the spinners are exceptional, Afghanistan lack a reliable pace option for the final overs.

Opportunities

  • Subcontinental pitches are tailor-made for Afghanistan's spin-heavy attack. On turning tracks, Rashid Khan and company could dismantle batting lineups that struggle against quality spin.

  • IPL experience of Rashid Khan, Gurbaz, Farooqi, and Noor Ahmad means they're comfortable in Indian conditions and accustomed to high-pressure T20 environments.

Threats

  • South Africa and New Zealand's pace attacks in Group D could expose Afghanistan's batting against quality fast bowling on bouncy tracks.

  • Flat batting surfaces would negate Afghanistan's spin advantage and bring them back to parity with stronger batting sides.

Afghanistan Probable Playing 11

  1. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk)

  2. Ibrahim Zadran

  3. Darwish Rasooli

  4. Gulbadin Naib

  5. Azmatullah Omarzai

  6. Mohammad Nabi

  7. Rashid Khan (c)

  8. Shahidullah Kamal

  9. Noor Ahmad

  10. Fazalhaq Farooqi

  11. Mujeeb Ur Rahman

Verdict

Afghanistan are the ultimate dark horses. With the best spin attack in the tournament and explosive batting from Gurbaz and Farooqi's pace, they can beat any team. A second consecutive semi-final is very much within reach.
