Abhishek Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah Fitness Update Ahead of India’s Second T20 World Cup Match

India have received a major boost with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah declared fit and available for their second T20 World Cup 2026 group match against Namibia on Thursday. However, the defending champions remain in a wait-and-watch mode over opener Abhishek Sharma, who was hospitalised in Delhi due to a stomach infection.

Tilak Varma, speaking at the pre-match press conference at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday, provided updates on both players that will be closely watched by Indian fans ahead of the crucial Group A fixture.

Bumrah Set to Return

Bumrah had missed India's tournament opener against the USA in Mumbai due to a high fever. Mohammed Siraj had replaced him in the playing XI and picked up three wickets in that 29-run win. But India's premier fast bowler is now back in business.

The 32-year-old bowled at full tilt during India's training session in Delhi on Tuesday and Wednesday, looking sharp after a 10-day break from bowling. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate had earlier confirmed that Bumrah was "feeling a lot better and moving a lot better."

"Bumrah should be back for the second game. He's absolutely fine," Tilak said, all but confirming the pace ace's return. With 107 T20I wickets to his name, Bumrah's return significantly bolsters India's bowling attack ahead of a packed schedule that includes the blockbuster clash against Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo.

If Bumrah returns, Mohammed Siraj is expected to make way despite his impressive three-wicket haul against the USA.

Abhishek Sharma Remains a Doubt

The bigger concern for India is the fitness of Abhishek Sharma, the world's No.1-ranked T20I batter. The left-handed opener has been battling a stomach infection for over a week now and was hospitalised in a private facility in Delhi after the team's arrival from Mumbai.

Abhishek had played in the opener against the USA but was dismissed for a first-ball duck and did not take the field during the second innings, raising immediate concerns about his health.

"When we reached Delhi, Abhishek needed examinations. He went to the hospital for that," Tilak revealed. "He has been discharged today and he's doing well. We have one more day before the game, so we'll decide tomorrow based on how he feels and then take a call."

However, given the proximity of his hospitalisation to the match, it appears unlikely that the team management will risk Abhishek against Namibia. With the high-stakes Pakistan fixture just three days later, India may prefer to give their star opener additional recovery time.

If Abhishek misses out, Sanju Samson is expected to slot in at the top of the order alongside Ishan Kishan. Samson was seen batting intensely in the nets during Tuesday's practice session, indicating the team is preparing for that contingency. However, the Samson-Kishan opening combination has never been tested in T20Is, which could be a concern for the team think-tank.

Washington Sundar Joins the Squad

In further positive news, all-rounder Washington Sundar has officially joined the Indian squad in Delhi after completing his rehabilitation from a side strain and rib muscle tear sustained during the home ODI series against New Zealand in January. Sundar bowled and batted at the nets on Tuesday, facing throwdowns towards the end of the session.

"Washington joined the team yesterday. He'll train today," ten Doeschate had said. "He does fit into one of our combinations where we can play three spinners. The luxury of having four all-rounders in the squad is that you can change the combination."

Sundar's return gives India the option of fielding a three-spinner attack — a potentially decisive advantage on the Delhi surface, which offered grip, turn, and bounce during the Namibia vs Netherlands match earlier in the tournament.

No Room for Complacency

Despite being overwhelming favourites — an India A side had bowled Namibia out for under 100 in a warm-up fixture — Tilak was quick to warn against taking the opposition lightly.

"No team can be taken lightly. T20 is a small format. Anything can happen. We will have to bring our A-game forward," he said.

India currently sit at the top of Group A after their opening-day win over the USA and will look to maintain that position with a strong performance against Namibia before the marquee showdown against Pakistan in Colombo on February 15.

The India vs Namibia match will be played on Thursday, February 12 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, with the first ball at 7:00 PM IST.
